What to expect
New to mindfulness meditation? Never experienced a guided session?
Here’s all you need to know:
Guided sessions are short.
A Mind Over Chatter session doesn’t go past 30 minutes. They’re easy to fit into your day and less of a commitment when you’re starting out, and you’re not sure how long you can sit still.
Wear whatever you want.
Since you’ll be sitting upright in a chair, you can simply stay in your uniform or whatever you’re wearing that day.
You’ll want to feel comfortable while you’re sitting, but there’s no need to change into sweats or yoga wear unless you want to.
How you meditate is up to you.
I mostly recommend sitting in a regular chair with your legs uncrossed, feet on the floor, and your arms and hands resting on your lap.
If you prefer, you can also sit cross-legged on the floor on a cushion or a folded blanket so your hips are a little higher than your knees. (Tip: if you’re sitting on a hard floor, put a folded towel or blanket under your feet to cushion your ankles.)
If you sit cross-legged you can also lean against the wall for support. If this position is a bit hard on your knees, feel free to stretch your legs out in front of you.
No one will know you’re a newbie!
Afraid you’ll feel self-conscious?
Don’t be!
Unlike yoga, where beginners always stand out from those with more experience, we all look the same while meditating.
Guidance is easy to follow.
I always keep my instructions basic and easy to follow.
During a guided meditation session I’ll explain how your mind will behave during meditation. (Hint: it won’t be quiet!) Then I’ll gently lead you through different mindfulness meditation techniques, offering guidance, insight, and periods of silence as we move from one technique to another.
Group meditations can strengthen your practice.
Apps are great for making meditation more accessible, but regularly attending live virtual or in-person guided group sessions can really strengthen your practice.
Meditation doesn’t have to be something you alone by yourself. Meditating with a group helps you feel connected to others, which can play a big part in helping you stick with your practice.
